At In Mobility PT & Wellness PLLC, we see bunions as a mobility issue, not just a bone problem. This deformity creates changes in joint mobility, muscle balance, and loading patterns. Furthermore, initial problem begins at the 1st toe, ball of the foot known as the 1st MTP – metatarsophalangeal joint. A common misconception is that bunions is additional bone grown to medial aspect of the foot. However, it is big toe drifts toward the second toe, causing the first metatarsal bone to angle outward causing discomfort and pain to the foot. Common causes for this phenomenon are: years of tight, narrow shoes or high heels, weak intrinsic foot muscles and overactive toe flexors, collapsed arches or overpronation, familial history or genetic predisposition.
How does rehabilitation help with bunions. At In Mobility PT, we focus on three core principles:
- Relieve Pain & Inflammation: Gentle joint mobilizations, soft-tissue work, and taping can immediately ease soreness.
- Restore Alignment & Mechanics: We retrain how your foot moves during walking and standing — improving load distribution through the big toe. Moreover, we focus on resolving the faulty compensatory patterns that can lead to knee, hip, low and neck pain
- Rebuild Strength & Stability: toe-spreading and intrinsic-muscle strengthening, manual therapy to mobilize the first ray and midfoot, banded toe-abduction drills, balance and gait retraining, footwear education and orthotic guidance.
We recommend that individuals with developing bunions choose a wide toe box and firm midsole. Perform daily foot mobility and toe splay exercises, strengthen your aches with barefoot balance exercises, stretching calves and big toe regularly. Make sure to avoid heels and narrow shoes and prolonged stationary positions. Furthermore, we advise seeking an evaluation from a medical professional: orthopedist, podiatrist, chiropractor or a physical therapist. It is imperative to attempt aforementioned conservative care such as analgesic medication, physical therapy, injections prior to surgery consideration.
